CICA in a Face Wash Is Not Marketing. Here Is What It Actually Does.

CICA, Centella Asiatica, is one of the fastest-rising skincare ingredients in India in 2026. Searches for 'CICA face wash India' are up over 180% year-on-year. But most of the content about it is either too technical to be useful or too vague to be trusted. This is the honest explanation.

What CICA actually does, the mechanism

Centella Asiatica works through three documented mechanisms. First: it inhibits the production of collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down skin tissue. Second: it activates skin's wound-healing response, which is why it is used in post-procedure recovery and in formulations for sensitised skin. Third: its active compounds, madecassoside and asiaticoside, have clinically documented anti-inflammatory action, meaning they reduce the redness and reactive inflammation that characterises oily, acne-prone skin.  In a face wash specifically, CICA serves a different purpose than in a serum. Its contact time is short, 30 to 60 seconds before rinsing. In that window, CICA works to counter the inflammation response triggered by cleansing itself. Every cleanser creates some level of disruption to the skin's surface. CICA's job is to keep that disruption minimal.

Why this matters specifically for Indian oily skin

Oily, acne-prone skin in India is not simply oily. It is oily skin operating under additional stressors: urban pollution that combines with sebum and settles in pores, hard water in cities like Delhi and Mumbai that raises skin pH and increases surface irritation, and humidity levels that create a sustained environment for bacterial activity on skin.  The inflammation response to all of these stressors is the reason oily Indian skin tends to be reactive, not because it is inherently sensitive, but because it is perpetually dealing with environmental load before the skincare routine even begins. A face wash that cleans effectively without adding to that inflammation load is categorically different from one that just removes surface oil.

CICA alone is not enough, what it needs alongside it

CICA is a calming active. It does not, by itself, clear pore congestion. That requires salicylic acid, the only common cleanser ingredient that is oil-soluble, meaning it penetrates through sebum and dissolves the debris inside the pore rather than just at the surface.  Allantoin adds a third function: it promotes skin cell regeneration and recovery, which means the skin surface is in better condition after cleansing than a standard formula would leave it.  The effective combination for oily, acne-prone Indian skin in 2026 is: salicylic acid for pore clearing, CICA for anti-inflammatory calming, Allantoin for surface recovery. These three functions, all in the 30 to 60 seconds of a face wash's contact time, define the difference between a cleanser that works with the skin and one that simply removes from it.

What to check on the label

Centella Asiatica can appear as: Centella Asiatica Extract, CICA, Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, or Gotu Kola Extract. All are the same plant compound. For meaningful effect in a face wash, it should appear in the top half of the ingredient list, ideally within the first 8 to 10 ingredients.  Also check: is salicylic acid present at 0.5 to 2%? Is Allantoin in the formula for recovery? Are sulphates (SLS/SLES) absent, or at least not in the first five ingredients? These three checks take 30 seconds and will tell you more about a face wash's actual effectiveness than any marketing claim on the front of the packaging.

FAQ

Q: Is CICA face wash safe for daily use in India?

A: Yes. CICA is one of the most gentle active ingredients in skincare, used in post-procedure formulations precisely because of its safety profile. Daily use in a rinse-off cleanser carries essentially no irritation risk for any skin type.

Q: Can I use a CICA face wash if I also use salicylic acid toner?

A: Yes. CICA and salicylic acid are fully compatible. CICA in the cleanser calms the skin during cleansing. Salicylic acid in a leave-on toner then continues the pore-clearing work after rinsing. The combination is logical and complementary.
